Crossbow Hunting Pros and Cons

Crossbow hunting has taken on a new excitement amongst people in the past years. But it has not always been seen in the same light. In the olden days, crossbow hunting was for hunters that could not draw a bow, but now crossbow hunting is available to everyone and very much enjoyed. But just like every other sport, it comes with a variety of strengths and weaknesses. This list of pros and cons will help you to purchase the best crossbow for the money.

Crossbows Are Easy to Use

One of the main reasons people enjoy crossbow hunting over compound or traditional is because this type of hunting is easier. Once you draw the string, the trigger ability locks in and that requires you to hold the bow at full draw while this special mechanism is doing the hard work for you. This type of shooting does not require a lot of physical effort from the hunter.

Because of this helpful mechanism, you, the hunter, are able to focus your entire attention on tracking and spotting prey. With the other types of bows that don’t offer this mechanism, the majority of your focus would go to keeping the bow fully drawn and maintaining an unwavering aim.

Using a crossbow is the perfect way to go for new hunters because it is almost like using a rifle. Your only job as the shooter is to press the trigger and release the bullet (or arrow, in our case). Another group of people who do well to use this tool is those with disabilities, as we mentioned from the old days. Crossbows are a blessing to those who are experienced hunters as well because their shots become even more accurate and on target with it. Crossbow shooting is really a

Crossbows Are Versatile and Accurate

It is difficult to find another weapon that has the same precision, versatility, and accuracy as good quality crossbows. Telescopic sights can be used with your crossbow this is what makes for an easy platform to transition to for those hunters who have more experience with rifle and shotgun shooting.

Most crossbows have a scope on the top for the hunter’s aid in aiming at their prey with precision. This is to help things move along faster. With a scope, there is no need to spend minutes attempting to find the right shot. Instead, you have assistance, even when the light is not bright.

The crossbow has high precision that allows versatility of position. You are able to hunt from a ground position while squatting, or as you stalk your prey. Crossbows give you so much ability to be a great hunter.

Crossbows Are Powerful

Don’t hear us wrong- crossbows are not lacking power just because they are a weapon that aids the hunter. These are POWERFUL and fast weapons that need safety features. The shooting speed with other bows depends a lot on the technique of the hunter, but the crossbow doesn’t have the same requirements. No matter your technique, crossbows will get to the target in no time.

If you are wondering how fast crossbows are, a good range to keep in mind is a speed of 350-450 per second, while a traditional compound bow is about 250-330 per second. Though this is a pro, there are cons involved after the fact. It may take a lot of brute force to take the arrow out of the thing it shot. This, of course, depends on which arrows you chose to use weight and lengthwise, as well as safety features.

Crossbows Are Heavy

As a more complex and involved weapon, the body of a crossbow uses more material and is much heavier and bulkier than a traditional bow. Because of this, many people face awkwardness in carrying one. The weight can make it hard for new hunters to keep a steady aim for long. But never fear, many companies that sell crossbows are using lighter materials as you saw in some of our reviews in this article. One of the best light materials that can be used to create the crossbow body is carbon fiber, so be on the lookout for this material as you purchase your weapon by your brand of choice. When thinking of the best crossbow for the money, remember that the extra money you’ll pay for lighter crossbows is worth it when it comes to shooting!

Crossbows Load Noisily and Slowly

The size of the crossbow can get in the way of your ability to draw quickly. This issue can really be a pain in the reloading process and if you miss the target and need to reload again, it is likely that your prey may have been able to run off in the time it takes. Another big issue, especially when it comes to prey, is the fact that the crossbow does contain some sound when you press on the trigger and this can scar our pray and cause them to run faster.

With a standard bow, your loading and reloading is much stealthier, and you are able to hide your identity from your prey much more easily. Hunting at a shortage is when most of these issues take place, so if that is your common distance when hunting, you may want to consider that a crossbow could mean for you.

Crossbows Are Not as Challenging as Normal Bows

Here, we are making a similar point as the first pro, but in light of it’s disadvantages. This is not applicable for everyone, as some may not see this as a con at all. But the truth is, the crossbow is much less challenging. For many hunters, being able to have complete ease in using a crossbow is a downside because they may enjoy the challenge in hunting with a traditional or compound bow. If the thrill of the hunt is the sport, then you may be looking for the excitement for getting better, little by little, at something that takes a lot of practice. Crossbows are much different and take adjusting to, especially when it comes to the ease they give. Experienced hunters may not want to make this adjustment, so it is absolutely something to consider when making the switch.

Knife Blade Types: 6 of the Best You Need in Your Collection

Choosing a knife that suits your needs isn’t always easy considering all the different knife blade types out there. And, if you’re serious about getting the most out of your blade, knife blade types do make a difference. So, what’s the story with all the different blade types, and more importantly, what do they do?

If you’re cutting a length of string, anything from an itty-bitty penknife to a cavalry sword will work. However, if your knife is more than a utilitarian tool, you’ll likely be looking for specific performance.

For example, an 18-inch Bowie will fell a small tree or quarter a grizzly bear without breaking a sweat. It won’t, however, fillet a freshly caught brown trout very well.

Here are some examples of the range of knives out there.

What sets knife blade designs apart?

Let’s look at the string example again. All knives are suitable for a small number of very basic tasks, like cutting our piece of string. However, each particular family of knife blade types has been tried, tested, and refined over time to perform specific tasks very well.

What makes a blade’s design exclusive?

Essentially, a knife’s intended use dictates the blade’s length, shape, thickness, and how it’s ground to a cutting edge. Some features are common to many designs, while others feature in only one blade family.

Some knife blade types are ideal for skinning and dressing game, others for fine fillet work, while some are fighting knives by design. In each case, the elements come together in a blade that does a specific job smoothly and efficiently.

Everyone will, of course, have their opinion on which knife blade types belong in your collection. And, while there will probably never be universal agreement and all the blades, these are the six knife blade types we think you should have in your collection.

Drop points are among the most common knife blade types and are one of the most generic in terms of versatility.

The classic drop point design features a spine that curves down through the tip to meet the point. This generally places the knife point at or slightly above the centerline of the knife. The result is a well balanced, strong blade that’s suitable for multiple tasks.

Drop point knives are single edged and are usually hollow ground with relatively broad blades in relation to their length. The soft spine and deep belly profile don’t produce a sharp, pronounced point.

  • Blade: 3 3/4″ 420HC Drop Point
  • Handle Material: Heavy Duty…
  • Overall Length: 8.5″ Open
  • Extras: Buck Forever…

Drop point blades are one of the most popular profiles for both folding and fixed blade knives. They are ideal for skinning and field dressing game. The less pronounced point of a drop point blade allows for great control with little chance of puncturing intestines or botching cuts.

Drop point knives with heavy, thick blades make for outstanding survival or bushcraft knives. Their overall strength and stability mean they are suitable for anything from opening cans to mallet-chopping firewood. The drop point is one of the most versatile knives you’ll own.

Where to buy

Clip point blades

Along with drop points, the clip point profile is one of the most popular knife blade types in general use.

Clip point blades have a pronounced straight or concave cut-away from the spine to the knifepoint. Bowie knives and Ka-Bar’s are classic examples of the clip point blade design.

This rapid transition from the spine to tip gives clip point blades a sharper, more defined point than a drop point blade. Apart from this significant difference, clip and drop point knives share many physical similarities. Both are strong and controllable blades, although the sharper, slimmer clip point may be more prone to bending or breaking.

Clip point uses

The sharper point of a clip point blade is more suited for cutting in hard to reach places. It’s also better at penetrating tough material. That said, it’s superior penetrative qualities make it less suitable for skinning or dressing game.

Outside of that limitation, clip point blades make excellent all-around carry knives.

The sheep’s foot blade was originally designed to trim the hooves of sheep. They featured a “hidden” point so they could cut material from the hoof without penetrating and injuring the animal.

The hidden point comes courtesy of a spine and cutting edge that runs parallel for most of the length of the blade. At the end of the blade, the spine curves down smoothly and rapidly to form a blunt, rounded point. This feature prevents the blade penetrating while allowing for straight, controlled cutting.

Sheep’s foot blade profiles grace both fixed blade and folder knives in a variety of sizes. They are popular pocket folders for day to day chores as diverse as opening packages and slicing beef jerky. Consider a sheep’s foot blade for a simple, reliable knife that gets the job done without punching unwanted holes.

Grand Way Folding Pocket Knife – Folding Knife – EDC and…

This specialized knife blade profile is found mainly in self-defense and combat knives.

The spear point is characterized by a symmetrical blade that is either double-edged or partial double-edged design. The design lends the blades a sharper point profile than a drop point but not as sharp as a clip point.

Spear points are generally flat ground. They have a thick central ridge, which gives the blade strength and rigidity. Knives like the Sykes Fairbairn service knife are prime examples of spear point blades.

Spear point uses

Spear point knives make excellent combat knives because their doubled-edged, sharp point design suits both cutting and stabbing applications. Also, spear point blades are generally very strong and rigid. This helps them penetrate well, even through heavy clothing. The profile features on many styles of combat and tactical blades, including daggers, boot, and push knives.

Unfortunately, spear point knives have fairly limited applications. Their narrow, sharp-pointed blade profile doesn’t offer good control for skinning or butchering tasks. They are suitable for general use. However, their real forte is close-quarters combat.

Folding Garden Knife With Lock Back Hawkbill Blade For…

  • The stainless steel blade is…
  • Premium finish rosewood handle…
  • Belt clip for added…
  • Lock-back for safety use and…
  • NAYE offers 1 year warranty….

The hawkbill, or talon, blade profile is the first of our two specialized knife blade types.

Hawkbill blades are instantly recognizable by their rounded, concave blades. Their shape is reminiscent of the bill or flexed talon of a bird of prey, hence their name.

While rather evil-looking, the blade has rather practical and mundane origins. Typically, the cutting edge of a hawkbill knife is plain ground and partially or completely serrated.

Hawkbill uses

Hawkbill knives started as a boring working knife. The hooked blade made cutting back toward the user safer, like when cutting carpets. Also, the hawkbill worked very well when trimming cylindrical objects like the insulation on electrical cables.

The hawkbill blade has evolved quite a bit over the last decade or so, though. The popularity of the karambit tactical knife among specialist military forces has seen the humble carpet knife take on an exciting cloak and dagger persona. Either way, the hawkbill knife is a worthy addition to any serious collectors arsenal.

Where to buy

The last of our knife blade types lineup is not so much a blade type at all. It’s rather a specific feature on a number of different profiles with a very specific purpose.

Gut hook blades feature a small semi-circular cutout or notch at the blade tip. The notch features a very sharp cutting edge and smoothly polished outside surfaces.

Gut hook uses

When removing the gut contents of animals during field dressing, it’s very important not to pierce the animal’s intestines. If this happens, the contents of the animal’s gut will contaminate the rest of the meat and may spoil the whole carcass. That said, opening the gut cavity can be tricky as the intestines and stomach are very close to the surface.

Enter the gut hook! This knife blade lets you make a small, controlled initial cut into the gut cavity. You then slip the gut hook into the cut and draw the blade back towards you.

The cutting edge around the gut hook then opens the skin and muscle of the abdomen, almost like a zipper. The smooth polished edges of the notch do not pose any risk of puncturing the intestines while the hook itself smoothly cuts through the skin.

The six knife blade types we have spotlighted here are by no means the only worthy contenders for collectors. They are, however, a selection of useful and versatile blades that will have you covered in most situations.

La Sportiva Skwama Review: Is It Worth The Money?

Have you been searching the internet for the best climbing shoe to tackle that next climb? You might search for a La Sportiva Skwama review to see if that shoe could be it.

Climbers all over the world are tackling bigger and better endeavors. From free soloing El Cap to simply getting your first membership at a climbing gym, you want a shoe that can help you improve. We get that. And with the vast amount of shoes on the market these days, it can be hard to see the differences between them.

Fortunately, finding the information you need has never been easier. Let’s take a look at this popular climbing shoe.

Our La Sportiva Skwama Review: An Overview

LA SPORTIVA Men’s Skwama Rock Climbing Shoe, Black/Yellow,…

  • ADVANCED EDGING – Designed to…
  • STICKY TOE BOX – The Skwama…

The La Sportiva Skwama is a technical and aggressive shoe that specializes in all-around feel and grip. It is built to be extra sensitive through its glove-like slipper fit and precision rubber cut-outs. With a simple hook and loop closure strap to lock you in, this is a well-loved climbing shoe.

The Skwama is made for crack climbing, toe hooking, and steep boulders. Its patented S-heel construction leaves you with no wiggle room, which is just what you want in a technical climbing shoe. While it is quite tight, after a break-in period, you can still make it work well for multi-pitch climbs.

With all of its wonders, it does have a bit of flexibility in the shoe. It is decent at edging, but it is not its strongest capability.

About La Sportiva

La Sportiva is one of the few companies left which owns and operates its factory right at its headquarters. In the little mountain town of Ziano di Fiemme, Italy, you can find their employees working hard at giving you the best product every time.

For almost 90 years, they have been designing, perfecting, and manufacturing some of the world’s best climbing shoes. This family-run business will never sacrifice their product or standards in order to make more money. Their attention to detail, the environment, and ethics are all reasons for you to be excited to buy a La Sportiva shoe.

Specifications of the La Sportiva Skwama

There is a reason this is not the only La Sportiva Skwama Review you will find. This is an insanely popular shoe, and there are quite a few reasons why. Climber Ben Rueck uses this shoe quite a bit as he learns to push himself further.

To start, La Sportive has patented a new P3 technology. This involves a split-sole construction that simply looks like a small triangle cutout near the ball of the foot. Users have found this helps spread out the weight on the sole, in turn reducing edge deformation.

In addition, this shoe fits very snugly on your foot. This is La Sportiva’s S-Heel construction, which leaves no room for air or movement, allowing you to know your exact foot placement. When that is matched with the all-around sticky rubber heel, you will have your best heel hooks yet in this shoe.

The heel is not the only glorious patch of 4mm Vibram XS Grip2 rubber. The La Sportiva Skwama has a unique patch of rubber on the top of the toe, making it ideal for toe hooks and scums. So, if you are needing a shoe to help with mantling, consider this your best bet.

The La Sportiva Skwama weight in at 7.5 ounces, making it a light shoe that comes in sizes from 34 to 46, including half sizes. Made of leather instead of synthetic material, it will stretch a bit over time. The upside of this is it will be less stinky than its synthetic counterparts.

A La Sportiva Skwama review would not be complete without a simple list of pros and cons. So, check out these boiled down lists of what are some favorite, and least favorite, features of this shoe:

  • A technical shoe that still performs well in all types of climbing

  • Rigid, suction-like heel cup

  • Thick, sturdy hook and loop closure strap for a snug fit every time

  • Excellent grip on smears

  • Toe rubber has worn out quicker than expected by some users

  • Shoe stretches out over time

The 11 Best Canopy Tents For Coverage When You Camp

When it comes to camping gear, cheap can turn into expensive rather fast. Repairing and replacing equipment can quickly add up financially, and it also raises frustration levels. Certainly not how you planned to spend your time connecting to nature. When it comes to buying gear such as the best canopy tent, it pays to pay attention to value.

That does not mean what you are looking for needs to be expensive. Keeping an eye on value compared with your actual needs means you will find a high-quality camping canopy that suits your camping lifestyle.

Comparison Table

The Best Canopy Tent: There Are so Many

There are several varieties of canopy tents. They tend to vary significantly in size, intended use, and ease of set-up.

It is what it is

Canopy tents serve many purposes, including commercial, beach, and camping. These tents are different than your camping tents you sleep in. Canopy tents offer protection from daily elements so your downtime is not spent in your tent when you could be enjoying the company.

In this case, we are focusing on the best canopy tent for camping. It is worth noting the canopy you choose may have an alternative use in your life, as it can go from the woods to the beach.

Let’s go camping, they said

Camping canopies are incredibly useful. From keeping the bugs away and the beating sun off you to shelter from unexpected torrential rain, the best canopy tent is worth toting to your camping adventure.

Choices, choices for the best canopy tent

Some options need considerations before you begin shopping. You need to ponder the ease of set up. Will another person be helping set up camp? Some canopies are more manageable to set up with a second person.

How many people are camping with you? If you have a crowd, you are going to need a bigger canopy or more than one.

a group pitching the canopy tent

The ease of carrying varies between canopies. Some are easy to move, and others are bulkier and more difficult to maneuver. Generally, they all have a carrying bag of some sort.

Strength matters when it comes to canopy tents, as well. Depending on camping conditions, you will need to think about wind and rain when making your decision.

Size does matter, especially when you must think about how many people are camping with you. If you camp with a crowd, a small canopy will leave some on the outside looking in.

Accessories might be a deal-breaker for you. Knowing you can add sidewalls or other functional extras might be a tipping point in your decision-making process. Some helpful accessories include sand weights for the legs, and sidewalls both with and without windows.

This camping canopy comes with four sidewalls. These sidewalls help protect from rain and other elements of nature. Since these are included with the canopy tent already, you eliminate needing to buy them afterward.

The Very Best Hiking Boots for Wide Feet

Your hike is only as good as your boots. But if you have wide feet, you might find your selection is somewhat…narrow. There’s good news, though. Many of today’s top hiking boot manufacturers are now producing boots in wide widths. What’s more, some manufacturers make medium-width boots with a wider fit. As a result, we wide-footers have more choices than ever. So, how do you choose the best hiking boots for wide feet?

If you are looking for our best hiking shoes, we have an article for that too!

A couple hiking using their Very Best Hiking Boots

Image via unsplash

You may think you know your shoe size. But do you really?

Did you know, for instance, that adults’ feet can get wider as we age? It’s true.

Also, if you gain or lose weight, that, too, can affect the width of your feet.

And check this out. Strange but true: your feet are actually larger at the end of the day than they are when you get up in the morning.

This is because your feet swell — sometimes a little, and sometimes quite noticeably — from carrying you around all day. And guess what? It happens when you’re hiking, too. The last thing you want is hiking boots that pinch and constrict toward the end of a long hike.

For this reason, consider measuring your feet at the end of the day, especially when measuring for hiking boots.

Finally, when it comes to comfort, the width measurement is just as important as the length.

But you already knew that.

If you’re like most adults, it’s probably been a while since you’ve had your feet measured. And that means it’s time to do it again.

You could head to your favorite shoe store and ask them to give you an update. You could also do it yourself.

First, trace both feet onto separate pieces of paper. Compare them. Is one obviously larger than the other? If so, don’t worry. This is pretty common.

In fact, the larger foot is the one you want to measure. So take that larger tracing and measure the length from the tip of the longest toe to the heel. This is your length.

Now, measure the width at the widest part of the foot. This is your width.

After that, subtract 3/16 of an inch from each measurement to account for the width of your pen or pencil mark.

Finally, find your size on a sizing chart.

So now you know your size. Great. But what about the width?

There’s a chart for that, too.

In your search, you may come across different notations for width.

Manufacturers often use these notations:

  • A and B denote narrow widths

  • C and D denote medium widths

  • E, EE, EEE, and so on, refer to wide widths

Sellers, on the other hand, often describe shoes as N (narrow), M (medium) and W (wide). You might also see these designations as part of the model number

The first way, of course, is to ask if the shoe feels too tight or too loose. That’s pretty easy.

But even if your shoe doesn’t feel uncomfortable, it still might not be the right width for your foot. How can you tell?

Try this. Lace the boot up normally. Now, rock forward onto the ball of your foot. Your boot should crease at the widest part of your foot.

If it creases somewhere else, the width is wrong, and it may cause you problems out on the trail.

As more people hit the trail, manufacturers are producing models in a greater variety of widths. But what if you’re having trouble finding specific wide-width hiking boots?

Then you might be able to get away with a regular-width boot from a brand that runs wide.

Different manufacturers use slightly different lasts, and some of those lasts are wider than others.

What is a last? You might ask.

A last is the mold around which a shoe or boot is formed. And some are larger and wider than others. So, if you know which brands and models run wider than others, you may be able to find a comfortable fit with a medium-width hiking boot.

Of course the sizing can vary for different models within the same brand, so, when in doubt, try a boot on before buying it.

There are three brands that tend to run wider than others. They are:

  • Merrell

  • Keen

  • Timberland

These brands also make a number of their hiking boot models in wide widths.

First, we drew on our own experience as wide-footed hikers. Because some boots have definitely worked better for us than others. We also looked at reviews from experts. Finally, we considered consumer feedback.

For our review, we concentrated on mid-range hiking boots for all-purpose hiking. Backpacking boots and walking shoes are another story for another time.

product comparison table

So, which are the best hiking boots for wide feet? There are quite a few. And the great news is, you don’t have to bust your wallet to get them.

Guys — are you looking for a great wide-width hiker? Then don’t miss these.

Merrell Men’s Moab 2 Mid Gtx Hiking Boot, Walnut, 12 M US

  • GORE-TEX waterproof membrane,…
  • Synthetic leather and mesh…
  • Bellows, closed-cell foam…
  • Protective rubber toe cap
  • Vibram TC5+ sole

No two ways about it, Merrell makes great shoes. But they got their start hand-making custom hiking boots. Backpacker Magazine once called them “the best hiking boots ever made.” Your mileage may vary, but we think that’s pretty close to the mark.

The Moab 2 GTX Mid is a mid-priced hiking boot. It’s made from synthetic leather, so if you’re looking for a good vegan hiking boot, this one might fit your bill. It also has a waterproof Gore-Tex lining, and a wraparound tongue to keep out debris.

As an aside, my wide-footed son trekked all over the far north of Scotland in these in rugged, muddy, squally conditions. They, and he came back in very good shape.

A few have cited durability issues, but overall, customers and reviewers seem to agree that this is one of the best hiking boots for wide feet you can find.

This model comes in both medium and wide widths.

Timberland Men’s Chocorua Trail Mid Waterproof, Brown/Green,…

  • These waterproof men’s hiking…

If you’re looking for a bargain but also want the security of a trusted brand name, Timberland boots are a good way to go.

Timberland is probably best known for its fashion boots. However, its hiking boots are more than adequate for your everyday hiking needs. And they look great, besides.

The Chocorua is an all-leather hiking boot. It has two different kinds of moisture protection: the 100 percent waterproof leather outer, and the proprietary Timberdry inner layer.

A few customers have cited durability issues, particularly with the stitching. However, most customers agree that, in addition to being some of the best hiking boots for wide feet, the Chocura is great value for money.

This model comes in both regular and wide widths.

Salomon Men’s X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boots, Black/India…

  • A time-tested last refined…
  • The Advanced Chassis,…
  • Two different types of rubber…
  • Salomon 2 year limited…
  • Features protective heel cap…

If you’re like me, you’ve probably admired the sleek, sporty look of Salomon running shoes. You may also have noticed that those shoes tend to run narrow.

But Salomon also makes hiking boots. And, great news, they make those hiking boots in wide widths, too.

The Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX hiking boot combines the sharp look of Salomon running shoes with the support of a hiking boot. This is another all-synthetic boot, so if you’re looking for a non-leather option, this one’s a contender.

These boots are specifically designed for wide feet. On top of that, these boots come with Salomon’s two-year warranty.

Some customers reported issues with fit and weight. However, by and large, most were pleased with their purchases.

Most people probably think of street shoes when they think of Skechers. But if you’re looking for a comfortable, lower-priced wide-width hiking boot, this one might be worth your time.

The Relmont Pelmo is a water-resistant hiking boot made from a combination of natural and synthetic leather. It comes in both regular and wide widths.

Our recommendation comes with a couple of caveats, however.

A number of customers reported discomfort stemming from the memory foam insole. Memory foam doesn’t make the most supportive hiking insole. Add to the fact that this model is water-resistant, rather than waterproof, and you may want to do a bit of modding before using these for more serious hiking.

But for the money, this is a decent wide-width light hiking boot.

Are women’s feet really that different? Maybe, maybe not. But shoe sizing conventions are. Here are our picks for the best hiking boots for wide feet, women’s edition.

KEEN Women’s Targhee II MID WP-W Hiking Boot, goat/crown…

  • Breathable leather lining
  • Metatomical EVA footbed
  • Non-marking rubber outsole

I’m going to come out and say it: I love my Keen boots. The wide, rounded toe box gives my Sasquatch-feet plenty of room to spread out. On top of that, they make great shoes.

The Targhee 2 is a tough, well-made all-leather mid-rise hiking boot. It’s waterproof, and has a breathable leather lining.

The Targhee 2 is only available in a medium width. However, many Keen boots run wide, and the rounded toe box of the Targhee 2 means extra room up front.

If in doubt, of course, try before you buy. But in our opinion, it’s difficult to go wrong with a pair of Keen hikers.

KEEN Women’s Gypsum II MID WP-W Hiking Boot, Earl…

  • Breathable leather lining
  • Metatomical EVA footbed
  • Non-marking rubber outsole

If you’re looking for a durable, comfortable hiker specifically made for a wide foot, then the Gypsum 2 Wide Width may be your next favorite boot.

The Gypsum 2 is an all-leather hiking boot with a leather liner. They’re waterproof, too. And they come with a supportive EVA footbed.

There’s not a lot to criticize here, and customers by and large, agreed.

TimberlanD Women’s White LeDge MiD Ankle Boot,Dark Brown,8.5…

  • You need waterproof hiking…

Now this is a very decent pair of discount hiking boots.

Timberland’s White Ledge is an all-leather waterproof hiker. It has a speed-lacing system, as well as a gusseted tongue to keep out dirt and debris. This is a fairly lightweight boot, and has a cushioned EVA insole for comfort and support.

Some customers reported comfort issues, particularly with the metal form in the heel. Overall, however, most agreed that this boot is excellent value for money.

The White Ledge comes in both wide and medium widths.

Merrell Women’s Moab 2 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot, Granite,…

  • Removable insole, Merrell air…
  • Performance suede leather and…
  • 5mm lug depth
  • M Select DRY seals out water…

You might be wondering, does Merrell make its exceptional Moab 2 in women’s sizes? The answer is yes! Not only that, but they make it in both regular and wide widths.

So, what’s so great about this boot?

First, it’s waterproof. Unlike the men’s, this one is made from suede and mesh. So if you’re looking for a leather boot, this is one to consider. It also has the famous Merrell air cushion in the heel for additional comfort.

On top of that, the Moab 2 uses recycled materials in its production.

A few customers reported issues with the waterproofing, so if you’re headed for wet weather, you might consider giving them a good blast with your favorite waterproofing spray first. Overall, though, customers absolutely loved this boot.

More and more, people of different shapes and sizes are finding pleasure and purpose on the trail. And hiking boot manufacturers are stepping up with hiking boots in different lengths and widths.

The best hiking boots for wide feet don’t have to be specifically wide-width boots. In many cases, we wide-footers can get away with medium-width boots that run wide. But many of us need boots in extra-wide widths. And fortunately those boots are often just a click away.

What makes a great hiking boot in your opinion? And do you have a favorite hiker that didn’t make our list?

We’d love to hear about it!

Here’s How to Clean Shoe Insoles to Keep Your Footwear Fresh

No one wants to spend their downtime learning how to clean their shoes. But if you hike regularly, knowing the answer to “how to clean shoe insoles?” is a must.

If you understand how to maintain shoe insoles, you’ll be able to hang on to them for longer. While shoe insoles aren’t typically expensive (although the best insoles for hiking cost more than regular insoles), if you have to replace them often, these little expenses will soon add up.

The good news is that washing hiking shoe insoles isn’t as big a chore as you imagine it to be.

Yes! Over time, shoe inserts get dirty. They also absorb sweat and dirt, which can lead to bacteria and mold growth. That, in turn, can cause bad odor. If the smell is really bad, you might be tempted to throw away your boots before they’re worn out.

Therefore, by taking proper care of your insoles, you not only extend their life but also prolong the life of your hiking shoes, saving money in the long run.

How to clean shoe insoles? It turns out that there’s more than one method that you can use to keep your insoles looking spotless and smelli
ng fresh!

Keep it simple, More often than not, soap and water are all you need to clean your dirty insoles.

by removing the insoles from your hiking shoes and set them aside to air out for a while. In the meantime, fill your bathroom sink, bucket, or container with warm water and add a few drops of mild detergent.

take a stiff-bristled brush (like a dish brush or an old toothbrush) or a soft cloth and dip it into the soapy water.Using circular motions, scrub the insoles. Pay careful attention to the heel and toes, as those are the two areas where stains and bad odors are usually the most noticeable. When you’re done scrubbing the tops of the insoles, flip them over and clean the bottoms too.

go over the insoles with a clean cloth or sponge, removing excess soap residue to ensure that your shoes are not full of foam the next time you hike in the rain. Place the shoes on a towel and let them air-dry overnight. If you’re in a rush, leave the damp insoles near a space heater or air conditioner, or if the weather permits, out in the sun.

Fill your bathroom sink with equal amounts of water and white distilled vinegar. If your insoles are super smelly, add a few drops of essential oils. Pine oil and tea tree oil work well.

Submerge the insoles in the solution and leave them to soak for three hours or longer. Then, carefully rinse the insoles under running water. Allow the insoles to dry overnight.

Add an equal amount of rubbing alcohol (hydrogen peroxide or distilled white vinegar will also work) and water to a spray bottle.

Shake the bottle to ensure that the two liquids blend thoroughly. Then, spray both sides of the insoles with the mixture.Don’t have a spray bottle at hand? A clean cloth will work just as well. Simply soak it in the solution and scrub the insoles by hand. The alcohol should evaporate fairly quickly, leaving your insoles nice and dry.

Fill a Ziploc bag or a Tupperware box with a few ounces of baking soda. Put the insoles inside the container, making sure to cover them entirely in baking soda. Then, seal the container.

Let the insoles sit in the baking soda overnight (for at least six hours, but preferably longer). The next morning, remove them from the container and wipe off the excess baking soda with a clean cloth.

Because leather insoles are generally more delicate than fabric-based insoles, they require special care.To begin with, dampen a cloth and pour several drops of saddle soap (soap designed to remove dirt and grime from leather) onto it. Then, use it to scrub the insoles. The saddle soap should lather well.

  • Neutral ph-balanced formula…

When the insoles are clean, use another moist cloth to wipe off the lather. Give the insoles plenty of time to dry before you put them back inside your shoes. Whatever you do, keep them away from direct heat to prevent them from cracking.

So far, all of the methods on how to clean shoe insoles that we’ve mentioned require that you take the insoles out of the shoes before you wash them. But what if your hiking boot insoles are sewn in?

Cleaning non-removable insoles might be a bit more challenging. But it can be done. We mentioned baking soda earlier on in this post, but as it turns out, you can also use it on non-removable insoles too. Sprinkle baking soda over your shoes and leave it overnight. Then, shake out the excess baking soda the following morning.

If baking soda sounds too messy to you, try dryer sheets instead. Cut a dryer sheet in half and then place each piece inside your shoes overnight to remove bad odors.

shoes, socks

Believe it or not, but activated charcoal and cat litter can eliminate unpleasant smells, too. Fill a sock with charcoal or cat litter, and put it inside your shoes overnight.

Steaming the inside of your shoe kills bacteria, as well. Be sure to use a handheld steamer and double-check that your shoe material is suitable for steaming. You can also wipe your insoles clean using distilled white vinegar or a diluted solution of alcohol.

If none of the above methods appeal to you, invest in a shoe cleaning spray (available at most shoe stores or online). Shoe cleaning sprays tend to be quick-drying and leave no stains.

Now that you know how to clean shoe insoles, you won’t have to put up with smelly shoes ever again! Perhaps more importantly, your insoles should now last you longer, which in turn will lengthen the life of your hiking boots too.

Add Air to Your Tires with the Best Bicycle Pump

Imagine you’re about to hit the trails for a bike ride. You grab your bike only to find that it feels a little sluggish. What’s more, you don’t even have the best bicycle pump to fix the problem.

While some bike problems require professional help, filling your tires is something every rider should know how to do. And since you can find a bike pump just about anywhere, there’s no reason for you not to own one.

But with so many options, how do you choose?

If you want to ride your bike rather than walk on a trail, you need the best bike you can get. However, even the best bikes require the best bicycle pump.

The last thing you want is for your tire to go flat during the middle of a ride. When riding on a trail, your tires might run out of air over time. Sometimes you may hit a bit of rough terrain and you need to patch your tire and pump your tire back up to be on your way!

And even if you never go on long rides, if you ride often, that can slowly cause your tires to lose a bit of air and pressure. The good news is that the best bicycle pump can help you get back to riding.

What is a bike pump?

The best bicycle pump works like air for car tires. But while you may have to go somewhere specific to refill your car tires, you can own the best bicycle pump for when you need to refill your bike’s tires.

For some bike pumps, you place them on the floor and connect a hose to the tire. You may have to stabilize the base of the pump while pushing (or pumping) air.

Other bike pumps are smaller, and you can take them on the go. These mini pumps can be useful if you tend to lose air pressure during the middle of a ride.

How can you find the best bicycle pump?

Once you decide to buy the best bicycle pump, you need to choose the type. Do you want something small? Or would you prefer a floor pump?

After that, you can go online or to a local bike shop. You can find tons of bike pumps available, and you can consider the different features to decide on the best bicycle pump for you.

With so many options available, we had some work to do to find the best bicycle pump. To do this, we started with some of the best selling options online. From there, we looked at each model’s specs and features.

But not so fast. After you use any of these pumps, be sure to check your tire pressure with a pressure gauge. You want to make sure that air actually went into the tire and that it’s safe to ride.

If you can’t seem to add air to a tire, you should take it to a bike shop. It may require a patch or plug in addition to just air.  Even the best bicycle pump isn’t perfect.

When you take your bike for a spin, you get the benefits of exercise and fresh air. But the downside is that you have to keep your tires in check.

Whether you ride often or not, you always want to make sure your tires have enough air. And one easy way to do that is to get yourself the best bicycle pump.

How Do You Close a Pocket Knife Safely and Securely?

A pocket knife is an essential tool for any angler, hunter, or plain old outdoor adventurer. But this handy tool will do you little good if you don’t know the basics. Like, how do you close a pocket knife securely and safely?

While it should be pretty straightforward, each type of pocket knife has a different closing and locking mechanism. If you don’t close your pocket knife correctly, you put yourself at risk of injury as you close it or during storage. After all, no one wants a pocket knife to spring open when (supposedly) safely stowed in their pants pocket!

So, how do you close a pocket knife? Are you using one of the best pocket knives on the market? And how do you know which type of lock your favorite knife uses?

pocket knife

Many people stay away from non-locking pocket knives, mostly because they’re afraid the lack of locking mechanism makes them more dangerous. This is both true and false, depending on your perspective.

Of course, a non-locking pocket knife will be more dangerous if used irresponsibly. But when used with care, there’s no reason not to use a non-locking model if that’s what you prefer. Because there’s no mechanism keeping the blade open, closing a non-locking pocket knife is simple:

  • Start by holding the knife by the sides of the handle or hilt — grasp the side away from the blade’s edge and point the blade away from your body.

  • With your other hand, hold the dull edge of the blade between your thumb and fingers.

  • Gently press on the dull edge of the blade until the pocket knife is securely closed.

Liner and frame lock pocket knives are very similar, and they’re also two of the most common locking mechanisms around.

folding knife

Each version uses a metal bar inside the knife’s hilt to hold the blade open during use. Pushing on this bar moves it out of the blade’s path so the knife can close.

So, how do you close a pocket knife with one of these locks?

Mossy Oak Folding Pocket Knife – 3 inch EDC Stainless Steel…

  • Locate the liner or frame piece holding the knife open.

  • With your dominant hand, hold the knife by the handle with your thumb against the lock.

  • Push down on the lock and carefully begin closing the blade.

  • Ensure all of your fingers are out of the blade’s path as you finish pushing it to a closed position.

Just from appearance alone, answering, “How do you close a pocket knife with a button lock?” is incredibly simple. As the name implies, button lock pocket knives feature a push-button on the side of the handle. Here’s how to close one:

TANGRAM Folding Pocket Knife 2.89 Inch,Button Lock and…

  • ALUMINUM HANDLE: Aluminum…
  • BUTTON LOCK: Tactical EDC…
  • PARAMETERS: Blade Length:2.89…
  • THE BEST CHOICE: A reliable…

  • Again, hold the knife handle in your dominant hand, with the blade’s edge facing away from your palm.

  • Push down the button with your dominant hand’s thumb.

  • With the button depressed, push the blade’s dull edge with your other hand until the knife closes.

Remember, pocket knife safety is less about the type of lock you use and knowing how to close it. Instead, it’s about respecting the blade and always being aware of where it is (and where your appendages are in relation).

No matter what type of lock your favorite pocket knife uses, irresponsible use is a recipe for disaster. So, remember: Always respect the blade.

What’s your favorite type of pocket knife locking mechanism? Let us know in the comments below!
